Telugu Cinema refers to the cinema in Telugu language, commonly referred as Tollywood. The Telugu film industry is the second largest in India in terms of number of movies made in a year and third largest in terms of infrastructure. The state of Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of cinema halls in India. The state of Andhra Pradesh has more than 2700 Cinema theatres, of which 150 are in the city of Hyderabad alone. The IMAX Theater in Hyderabad has a few world records to its credit. The industry has a few Guinness records for the most films directed by male and female directors; the most number of films produced by a person and for having the largest film studios in the world. Recently, star comedy actor Brahmanandam got Guinness Record for acting more than 750 films in a single Language.

The Telugu film industry turned 75 years in 2007 and has renowned the platinum jubilee celebrations. The total number of movies released in Tollywood in year 2006, is 243, those languages are by Hindi, (Bollywood) (223 Movies) and Tamil Film Industry (160 Movies). More than 150 Telugu movies are made a year and the industry turnover last year was Rs. 2.5 billion. In 2005, the annual turnover reached to Rs. 2.3 Billion ($52 Million) on ticket sales of 700 million. Popular movies tend to open during the three festive/holiday seasons of the region: Sankranthi, summer, and Dussera. In 2004, the total business for the Sankranthi season was around Rs. 1.5 Billion (150 Crores). 

Nowadays Telugu films are not known for their artistic qualities or seriousness of themes. Mostly they are hero oriented, highly melodramatic social dramas or action flicks. Meaty, character driven roles are rare and women are entirely sidelined, so much so that Telugu girls are no longer entering the industry and most heroines are from other South Indian states. The dearth of good themes, screenplays and good writers is a perennial problem and the industry constantly has to borrow from Tamil or Malayalam. There is also rampant plagiarism from Hollywood movies.

But films like ‘Vanaja’ bring with it renewed hope. Directed by Rajnesh Domalpalli, this film about a village girl is winning accolades all over the world. It has already won 15 awards at over 60 international film festivals.
